Its the end of the month and yall I am straight up exhausted lol, there's still some time before I start uni and that whole new world. I have been stuck reading Karl Polanyi's Great Transformation for a loong time, legit some 4 months because of balancing work and application work. Long story short gonna have to speed-run the book if I wanna finish it on time. Coincidentally it was on my uni reading list soo I think I pulled a lucky oopsie and saved me from reading it once I edit up my notes on that front

Also finishing up Destination Chungking by Han Suyin and Candide by Voltaire by the end of the month so I can be soo insufferable its not even funny.

The last couple books I've been reading mainly chinese authors, cause I found those books at home and some of them are genuinely amazing, the last one I read was At Middle Age by Shen Rong and it really showed me a side of China I never really hear about, especially the overworked middle age folks post Mao's era and during the Deng government.

Destination Chungking is mainly an autobiographical book of the writer when she met and fell in love with her husband before and during the Sino-Japanese war and it's a great historical account of China during that time. I wanna read some of her other works but I have no idea how tough uni is gonna be and balancing reading all the things I wanna read.

I still have quite a bit of packing to do, mainly to undo it and see if I am over packing and if push comes to shove I might just ship it to myself and wait it out, especially the books I wanna take.

P.S if anyone in the studyblr/bookblr community has some places to visit in Lisbon or Portugal in general who have second hand books in English or just highly recommended bookstores it would help a ton!

The other great thing about April 25th:

In the early hours of 25 April 1974, the Carnation Revolution began in Lisbon. The longest Fascist dictatorship was toppled, sparking spontaneous demonstrations in the street, in which civilians ran out to mingle with soldiers, despite orders to stay inside. Carnations abounded in the famous central flower market of Lisbon, and many citizens put them into the gun barrels of the soldiers.

Side note the beginning of the coup operations was signaled by the playing of Portugal’s 1973 Eurovision entry on the national radio station at midnight.

The Siege Of Lisbon (1147)

England did not consider himself prone to flights of fancy, but the man before him gave him no choice, except to fly. Licking his cracked lips, England gingerly stepped toward him (ignoring the wry glance that his commander cast at him, as if to say that ‘I told you so, I told you going on this crusade was worth it’). ‘’Uh-’’ England shut his eyes, shaking his head as shame seethed through his body (young, immortal and godly…he had no place mumbling like a boy as he outstretched a hand towards Portugal before him, arching an eyebrow). ‘’I wish you good luck in keeping your city.’’ He decided to say, instead of what’s your name, cautious of coming across as overeager - or even foolish, that he should’ve known by now. 

It was his duty, England recalled quietly, as his gaze picked through the cluster of waiting soldiers (hardly professional men as England usually expected, but bound by oaths innumerable, but of course…the country would have nothing less than faithful men). 

The man looked up, squinting in the sun as he nodded wearisomely; His chest heaved under his chainmail, and Portugal wondered when he’d started feeling so exhausted. The first thing that he needed was rest and the last thing (he glanced pointedly at England, who didn’t seem to notice the evident irritation) that he needed was to be sucked into a long winded conversation, of platitudes and thankfulness that itched Portugal’s skin. ‘’I’ll manage.’’ He replied curtly, nose wrinkling in disdain - a group of soldiers had broken away, pouring through the city and prying hands placed where they should not be. ‘’Don’t concern yourself with my affairs. You’ve completed your end of the oath and you’ll soon get your reward.’’ 

Were the others presuming him weak for such assistance?…Portugal’s gaze raked over England (sharp and narrowed, like a bird of prey picking at a carcass), wondering if that was what he was thinking. ‘’I’ve got something to be doing…’’ He nodded curtly, turning on his heel and walking away (some horrified gossip spoke of a murdered bishop, Portugal’s blood turning into furious ice, cheeks red with frustration as he slipped between the crowd of soldiers).

‘’Do you need help-!’’ England called out, rushing after Portugal. He hadn’t initially cared for the detour - but he could not help but feel a little intrigued (a strange notion, England knew, and a small part of him chided such a distraction) by the individual who had led a garrison of soldiers into these walls, breaking the siege and the hunger. Portugal did not turn back once, but England followed all the same - until finally, he found himself lost in the streets of Lisbon. 

It wasn’t a place that England was hugely familiar with (never mind the fact that there were soldiers, running up and down the streets, fleeting faces that England hardly recognised as his own men).  ‘’Shit-’’ He stumbled, turning in a half-circle as he looked around wildly. Colour flooded his pale cheeks, England’s feet scuffing over the cobblestones as he looked around amidst the crowds, nearly tripping and falling when he found himself caught. When he looked up, he spied a familiar (if annoyed) face. ‘’Sir-!’’ England jerked himself upright, smoothing down his armour (not that there were any creases, he just needed something to do with his hands) as he cleared his throat. Something was gravely wrong, he realised, searching Portugal’s face as he took a deep breath, cocking his head to the side. ‘’...Did someone break their oath?’’ He asked softly, swallowing a lump in his throat. None of the soldiers were recognisable immediately to him, at least not as his own, but suppose that he’d missed one. ‘’I-I can count my men. I promise-’’ England knew that he needed allies, and by God, he wanted his man on his side (and more, a feeling he could not put a name to).

‘’Mhmm, you could say that.’’ Portugal groused, the lines of his face thick with sweat and dust; The rueful expression of a man scorned. Portugal fell silent (staring long and hard at England, until the other swore that he burned). There was nothing deceptive about England’s words, and eventually Portugal relented with a scoff, shaking his head disdainfully. ‘’Honestly, you ask some people to do you a favour…’’ Longing coiled deep in his bones, as Portugal sighed - head in hand as he stalked past England, through the winding streets and towards the gate. There had been a man, or so they claimed, stood there splitting the city-gates wide open - and bled a pathway for them. 

Men’s tongues had already started spinning that legend, and one that wiped away Portugal, like lines in the sand; And once more, Portugal felt a rise of dread in the pits of his stomach, red-crescents dug into the palms of his hands as he took a deep breath (only digging deeper into his skin as England’s hand reached out for his shoulder, a furtive glance at England like embers in a fireplace). ‘’What? Go count your men already, what are you standing here for?’’ 

‘’Ah-!’’ England blinked, jerking as Portugal’s voice cut through his reverie (a menagerie of thoughts that trooped like soldiers, all buckling and crashing into one another as England quickly recalled his duties). Without another word, England withdrew his hand and marched off, barking orders at anyone who would listen to him - anyone who carried his banner quickly swept up as they formed a row; The counting didn’t take long, England’s expression pinched as he shook his head. Of course, England thought ruefully, they were good men (he was), faithful and loyal men (he was) and there was no way that any of them wou-

‘’So?’’ Jesus Christ, could Portugal stop sneaking up like that? ‘’No. It was none of them.’’ England huffed, an eyebrow arching as he turned to stare quietly at Portugal. ‘’It would be none of them, the young man ground out. ‘’I would have nothing less than faithful men following me. I have nothing else to report.’’ England stood, as tense as a drawn bow (poised, his spine held rigid like a taut string).

‘’Faithful men?’’ Portugal arched an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he leaned back ponderously. ‘’God really mean that much to you…?’’ Of course, God was important to all of them - and the look on England’s face (startled, slightly insulted) was a little more interesting than the faint, furtive glances the taller had been casting him since he got here, but Portugal was not particularly interested in piety today. ‘’More than gold?’’ A sharp smile broke his features, a sword splintering bark as Portugal turned to face him. ‘’More than wealth?’’ (This was a trap.) England swallowed thickly. (He allowed himself to be caught) ‘’An oath is an oath.’’ England replied plainly. ‘’And I stick to them.’’

Museu Arqueologico do Carmo & Museu da Cerveja - Lisbon, Portugal

We started today off with a visit to Carmo Convent, which is now an amazing archaeological museum. Construction on the convent began in 1389 and by 1551 it had been expanded to house 70 clergy and 10 servants. It was significantly damaged in the 1755 earthquake and had to be abandoned. In 1800, minor repairs were made and the military took over the space. In 1864, the space was donated to the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists and turned into a museum.

It is definitely a work-in-progress, however, the artifacts that are on display are impressive. We were amazed at what was displayed in the convent, as well as the actual ruins of the convent. Well worth the time and the $4/person admission fee.

Inside the convent - no roof, beautiful arches, and lots of displays of pediments and columns in this area.

Inside there are multiple rooms filled to the brim with historical artifacts from around the world.

Top to bottom: porcelain tile panels depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, tomb of a king, an elaborately decorated chest, and a mummy.

We visited the museum for over and hour, so many artifacts to take in - we were glad that we decided to go inside and explore. We wandered to the back side of the convent, where there were some nice views.

St. George's Castle was visible on the treed hillside.

Lisbon Cathedral was our next destination - we opted to not go inside.

We continued our tour, finding a vista with lovely views of the Tagus River, as we made our way toward the National Pantheon.

The National Pantheon - which houses the tombs of Portugal's major historic figures. We opted to not go inside, small admission charge or free with Lisbon Card.

A few of the beautifully tiled facades we came across as we made our way around Lisbon today.

Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora - a Catholic monastery. We walked the perimeter and enjoyed a little shade on a bench in the courtyard.

Our next stop - the Beer Museum! Doug, waiting for our tour in the regal "Beer Tour Chair".

Our tour guide, Daniel, was amazing and we learned a bit about the history of beer during the tour. We shared the tour with 4 young people from England, they were delightful. Part of the tour is a tasting, everyone chose a beer from a huge refrigerator and we were given the option of sharing the beers or just tasting our own selection. Luckily, everyone was willing to share and we had a great time visiting and tasting the beers.

We enjoyed a couple beers and lunch at the restaurant at the Beer Museum - inside is very fancy dining, outside is way more casual. On my plate is bolinho de bacalhau (salt cod croquette, a local favorite). Doug was complaining because he had to wait to drink his beer while I took the picture!

The Beer Museum is located on Praca do Comercio - a beautiful plaza along the river. Below are scenes from around the plaza, including the Cais das Colunas (an historic pier with stone pillars). There was a lot happening on and around the plaza.

We were ready to head back to our place, we had covered a lot of territory and needed to put our feet up for a bit. On our way back, we passed by Pink Street - an Instagram hot-spot - EVERYONE was taking a selfie along this street. Pretty crazy!

what sports do you play/have you played? I used to play basketball and did swimming for 2 months but sports are not really my thing and since I fucked up my knee when I was 7 years old I can't do impacts
